Golf as a wellness allowance – rules, background and why it is now approved
Golf can today be counted as exercise or simpler forms of wellness within the rules for tax-free staff wellness benefits. This means that the activity itself can be covered by the wellness allowance. At the same time, it is still up to the employer to decide whether the allowance is offered and which activities are approved internally.
For a long time, golf was treated more restrictively than many other forms of exercise. The sport was considered expensive, exclusive and less accessible, which meant it often fell outside the rules even though in practice it encompasses everyday exercise, technique training and a low threshold for beginners.
That view has changed. As the rules have been reinterpreted and everyday golf has become more open, the sport has gained a clearer place within wellness. Pay & play facilities, par-3 courses and practice areas have lowered the threshold, and it is often possible to play without large fixed costs.
This is also evident in how golf fits into the rest of the day. Many people go straight from work to the range or a lesson, and then clothes that work in both environments become a reasonable choice. A Tech Polo has exactly that balance: light, quick-drying and clean enough in its look to work beyond the course as well.
What applies to the wellness allowance for golf – the limit, conditions and the employer's policy
The main rule is that the wellness allowance may amount to a maximum of 5,000 kronor per person per year to be tax-free. If the employer pays out more than this, the entire allowance becomes taxable, not just the part that exceeds the limit. This is worth keeping in mind if you plan to use the wellness allowance for golf on several costs during the same season.
Another basic principle is equal treatment. All employees must be offered the same amount and the same conditions for the benefit to be tax-free. The employer therefore cannot give a more favourable arrangement to some employees and a more limited one to others.
At the same time, the regulations and the internal policy are not the same thing. The fact that golf can be approved under the tax rules does not automatically mean that every workplace reimburses golf costs specifically. Some employers require particular documentation, others approve only certain types of play or training. Therefore, always check what applies before you book or pay.
In practice, it usually works so that you pay yourself first and then request reimbursement against a receipt or other documentation. The cost must normally be paid during the correct period in order to count towards the year's allowance. For those who move between office, car and course in the same day, it often becomes clear how much function matters even beyond the reimbursement itself. A pair of Tech Pants works well in that shift, precisely because they cope with movement without looking too sporty.
Wellness allowance golf – approved and non-approved golf costs
What can be reimbursed are the costs of the exercise or training itself. These include, for example, green fees, pay & play, playing fees, driving range, range balls, golf lessons, beginner courses, coach-led sessions and certain season passes for practice areas or par-3 courses.
Competition fees may also be approved in some cases, for example entry fees and participation fees, as long as the cost stays within what is usually accepted for simpler recreational sport and the employer approves the arrangement.
At the same time, there are clear limits. Membership fees to a golf club are not approved. The same applies to equipment and personal purchases such as clubs, shoes, bag, trolley, balls and clothes. The wellness allowance is intended for the activity, not for what you own or use around it.
This is an important distinction in all planning around the wellness allowance for golf. A lesson or a round may be reimbursable, but not what you wear during it. That does not, of course, prevent well-thought-out garments from making golf smoother. A Midlayer Q-zip, for example, works particularly well during cooler evening sessions, when you want something light and mobile rather than a heavy outer layer.
Also be careful with packages where several parts have been combined into a total price. If an arrangement contains both approved and non-approved parts, the documentation needs to be clearly broken down. The better the specification, the easier it becomes for the employer to reimburse the correct part and decline the rest without discussion.
How to use the wellness allowance for golf correctly – receipts, year-end and smart next steps
The most important thing about the receipt is that it shows what the purchase concerns. The employer must be able to see that it is an approved wellness activity and that the cost can be distinguished from things that may not be reimbursed.
Green fees and competition costs sometimes require a little more precision. If an amount covers several items, the documentation should show what relates to play, what relates to any competition fee, and whether anything else is included. Unspecified total amounts are often what create problems afterwards.
For purchases that span a year-end, it is normally the time of payment that is decisive, as long as it concerns an actual wellness activity. Gift cards, on the other hand, do not work as a way of postponing use.
A simple routine goes a long way:
- check the workplace's policy,
- choose an activity that fits within the rules,
- save a clear receipt,
- submit the documentation in time.
Those who do this reduce the risk of misunderstandings and get a better overview of how the wellness allowance for golf can actually be used.
Once the administration is out of the way, the rest becomes easier. Golf gets to take centre stage instead of the paperwork. On days with changeable weather, a Tech Vest can be just right over a light layer, and for more exposed conditions a Tech Anorak provides protection that still feels supple in the swing. If you want to build a wardrobe that moves just as naturally between the course and the city, you can see the entire range at Local Rule.
